Grade 4 students across the College had the opportunity to take part in the program on Thursday 6th of August.
Our Grade 4 students had an informative and interactive incursion with the team from ‘Democracy, Community and Me’ coming to the College.
Students explored the fundamentals of Australian democracy, defining key terms, distinguishing between rules and laws, and learning the roles and responsibilities of the three levels of government.
Students then stood for election in a mock classroom council, discovering how preferential voting and redistribution and absolute majorities work.
Stepping into the shoes of Councillors and residents in a lively council meeting role-play, complete with costumes and props, students debated real issues, contributed to discussions, and made key decisions, to see how local laws are created and applied.
This was an extension on what they have been learning in class about local governments and an excellent interactive way to apply their knowledge.
