Doctors in Secondary Schools

Narre Warren South P-12 College is one of many Secondary Schools in Victoria that currently participate in the Doctors in Secondary Schools program.

This Victorian Government initiative funds general practitioners to provide medical advice and health care to secondary students.

The objective of the program is to:

  • Make primary health care more accessible to secondary students
  • Provide support to young people through the early intervention of health problems
  • Reduce the pressure of working families/carers

As part of this program we have a Doctor and Nurse from Casey Gate Medical Centre onsite every Tuesday from 10 am until 2 pm. They are available to see students in our fit for purpose consulting rooms located in our dedicated GP building. The Doctor and Nurse can provide free primary health care services, just as you would expect from a clinic in the community.

We know that teenagers are the least likely of all ages to seek health care and this program seeks to address this issue as many health problems in adulthood stem from this time of life.

What will the Doctor do?
The Doctor will provide students with the same free primary health care services as a medical clinic. They can also see a student about their physical and mental health. The Doctor may also make a referral to other health services as required. The Doctor will bulk bill through Medicare, so there will be no cost to the student or family.

The program is not designed to replace your existing regular GP, but rather it can provide a convenient alternative during school hours without impacting families’ work commitments.

How do I access the Doctor?
Students can make a booking to see the Doctor through our College Wellbeing Centre.

Parents, Carers and Guardians can call the College to book an appointment for their child.
